Hi! I’m Katie

Hi! I’m Katie, the founder of the Leather Knot, a small business in Tehachapi, CA! I am often found in my mountain studio, crafting one-of-a-kind jewelry and accessories. I am passionate about creating a unique and special item for each and every customer.

Timeless jewelry is jewelry that reflects who you really are.  It doesn’t change with the trends and it’s a look and a style that you always gravitate towards.  These are the pieces I want to make for you.

My faith is an integral part of my life and influences every aspect of my work.  I believe that my talents are gifts from God and I strive to use them to serve others and bring glory to Him.

Some days I’m a leatherworker, and some days I’m a silversmith. But I’m grateful for every day I get to have this work and this life. Homeschooling my kids and running this business is a lot to balance. But it’s the best life for us. Thank you Lord for your path and your plan.. it’s always better than anything I could dream up.

Whenever you find me in my studio, I am smiling ear to ear, as I truly love my job.  Thank you, with my whole heart, for supporting my dream.

FAQ INFORMATION
Do you take returns/exchanges?

I generally do not accept returns or exchanges, so please consider that when ordering.  Please make sure to read the item descriptions, such as sizing details for rings and other important details. Thank you for understanding.

Can you make me a custom piece?

Custom pieces are so fun to create, and I’m happy to fit them in as my schedule allows.  Being a Mom is my most important and favorite job, so my time for custom work is limited.  Please reach out to me at theLeatherKnot@gmail.com to discuss what you have in mind!  Custom pieces can be so special and meaningful, and make truly memorable gifts.  Custom work usually requires more planning and design than my collection work, so the prices can be higher because of that.

Where do you get your supplies?

I try to shop small whenever possible! I buy American mined stones whenever I can and support family-owned lapidary businesses around the country.  I only use quality metals, including Sterling Silver, Fine Silver, Copper, and Brass.  One of my dreams is that you will someday pass on this jewelry to the next generation to cherish and enjoy, so that requires the best materials and supplies to ensure the best quality items I can make with these two hands.

How do I know when you have new items?

I slowly craft and forge these items by hand, so it takes time to build up a new collection of pieces.  Generally I will release, or drop, a new collection about once a month. I am building up an email list, so please join that to get news of drops!  There’s a button to join that list at the bottom of this page. I post updates on facebook and instagram, so please follow me there too.

Can rings be resized?

Generally the answer is no.  My process of making a ring bigger involves hammering the metal on a mandrel to force it larger, so it only works if you are ok with a textured band.  I am not able to make rings smaller.  A tip if your ring is just a tad too big: stack it with a couple of thin bands and it will “snug up” your ring so it feels more secure on your finger.

How do I find my ring size?

Any jeweler will be able to quickly measure and give you your ring size.  You can also purchase ring sizers online.

How did you get started?

I have Always loved creating and I walked around with crayons as a child.  I always wanted to take every art class ever offered and I experimented with various art mediums my entire life.  So that was kind of the beginning. Leather is special to me because of my family heritage of cattle ranching.  Raw leather is such a beautiful blank slate, and I have always been fascinated by what you can create with it.  Leather is my comfort zone, and I have worked with it so long that it’s second nature.  I am a big believer in always learning, so in the summer of 2022 I took a silversmithing class that changed my life.  I discovered another art medium that I couldn’t get enough of, and now I split my work time between leatherworking and silversmithing.  I don’t know what the future holds, but I know it’s good. God created this world and everything in it.  He created some people to work with their hands to make things, and I know I’m one of those people.  So stay tuned… who knows what’s next! 🙂
